A 1-day workshop leading to Ofsted-recognised certification.
***Online course accessible from September 2020***
With content derived from 'Keeping Children Safe in Education: Statutory guidance for schools and collges (2020), this course provides delegates with an understanding of the process and procedure underpinning effective recruitment practice.
(created by the ‘National College’ (NCSL), formerly promoted by the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) and now by the Safer Recruitment Consortium.
The Bichard Enquiry into the Soham Murders of August 2002 made 31 Recommendations to central government, all of which were accepted.
Recommendations 16, 17, and 18 relate to a ‘consistent, national standard of training’ in support of the recruitment process, as hi-lighted by the failings of those in the Soham College procedures.
16 Head teachers and school governors should receive training on how to ensure that interviews to
appoint staff reflect the importance of safeguarding children.
17 From a date to be agreed, no interview panel to appoint staff working in schools should be convened
without at least one member being properly trained.
18 The relevant inspection bodies should, as part of their inspection, review the existence and effectiveness of a school’s selection and recruitment arrangements.
The training material was created by the ‘National College of School Leadership’ (NCSL), originally designed to be accessed and completed on-line and is now also accessible as a 1-day workshop through a national network of accredited trainers.
NB: The statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ (2020) sets out the responsibility of governing bodies and proprietors as follows:
26. Governing bodies and proprietors must ensure that they comply with their duties under legislation.
They must also have regard to this guidance to ensure that the policies, procedures and training in
their schools or colleges are effective and comply with the law at all times.
